Why Brake Pads Matter
Your brake pads are an important part of your brake system. Every time you press the brake pedal, the pads create friction that slows and stops the vehicle. Over time, this friction wears the pads down. If they become too thin, your vehicle may take longer to stop or produce noises like squeaking or grinding. Worn brake pads can also cause damage to other brake system parts, leading to more expensive repairs.
Replacing brake pads early helps maintain safe braking performance and protects other brake components.
Signs You Need Front Brake Pads Replaced
It’s not always obvious when brake pads are wearing out, but there are common warning signs to look for:
- Squeaking or squealing noises when braking
- Grinding sounds, especially when stopping
- Needing more pressure to slow down
- A vibration in the brake pedal
- Dashboard brake warning light
If you notice any of these symptoms, it’s a good idea to bring your vehicle in for inspection. Since TQ Auto Care accepts walk-ins, you can simply stop by when it is convenient.
Understanding Your Brake System
Your vehicle’s braking system has several parts that work together to bring you to a stop. The most common setup on modern vehicles is disc brakes, especially on the front wheels, where braking force is highest. Disc brakes include:
- Brake Pads: Apply pressure to slow the vehicle
- Brake Rotors: Metal discs that the pads press against
- Brake Calipers: Hold and control the pads
- Brake Lines: Carry brake fluid from the master cylinder to the brakes
In some older vehicles, the rear wheels may still use drum brakes, which are a different type of brake. Whether your vehicle uses disc brakes or a mix of systems, regular maintenance is key to ensuring safety.
Brake Pads And Rotors: Why They Often Need Service Together
Many customers wonder whether they need to replace both brake pads and rotors at the same time. While brake pads wear down more frequently, rotors can also become uneven or worn over time. If a rotor surface is damaged or too thin, it may not allow the new brake pads to work properly. Replacing or resurfacing rotors when installing new pads helps maintain smooth braking and prevents vibrations.
At TQ Auto Care, our technicians will check the thickness and condition of the rotors and recommend what is best for your vehicle.
